Finals at Mt. Pearl Christmas Tournament Deliver Great Entertainment!
The six division finals on Friday at the 24th Annual Cec Stoyles All-Star Hockey Tournament, hosted by the Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association, delivered an exciting evening of hockey for the hundreds of fans attending at the Glacier. The Goulds Pacers kicked things off by defeating the St. John's Caps 3-1 for the Atom B title. The St. John's Caps Atom A squad then skated to a 4-1 decision over the DJHL-leading Avalon Celtics to claim the Atom A crown. The Southern Shore Breakers then followed with an exciting 2-1 victory against the Avalon Celtics for the Bantam B title when Ryan Fitzgerald scored the overtime winner. In the Peewee B final up next a bit of local hockey history was made. The Paradise Warriors came back from a 4-1 deficit with 4:20 remaining to tie the game against a strong Southern Shore Breakers team when Bradley Hann scored from the slot with just 14 seconds to play. The Warriors won it when Nick Jones converted an Evan Brenton pass for the overtime winner, making them the first team ever to win a Mount Pearl Christmas Tournament title under the new Paradise banner. Meanwhile on Glacier 2, the RBC Cobras and goalie Jack Marshall shut-out the RBC Jackals 4-0 to claim the Peewee A title in convincing fashion. The showcase event of the evening was the Bantam A title match and the players performed with the grit and intensity usually reserved for championship play. The RBC Thrashers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the RBC Crushers on a pair of goals from Patrick Hurley before the Crushers rallied back late in the game with a pair of power play markers. That set the stage for Riley Coady's shorthanded breakaway goal with a minute left to eventually seal victory for the Thrashers. Hunter White played an exceptional game in the Thrashers net, repeatedly denying the strong firepower of the Crushers throughout the match. A big thank you from the DJHL to MPMHA for running a very successful event. The 25th edition next year promises to be a special one!
