Celtics are Atom A Champs
Avalon Celtics defeated the St. John’s Caps 4-3 in Atom A action at Twin Rinks on Thursday night to claim the DJHL Championship. Celtics won the best of five series in four games. The game was high tempo from the opening whistle as both squads skated hard throughout the contest. Caps edged the Celtics 15-14 in the shots department, but both teams had seven scoring opportunities each. Defenseman Carter Hynes scored a pair for the winners, including the game winner on a screened slapshot from the blueline in the third period. Jacob McGrath and Elias Marner also scored for the Celtics. Shifty Matt Butler scored the highlight goal of the game by dangling through the Celtics defense in the second period and lodging a high backhander to the top corner. Andy Knight and Luc Marnell also scored for the Caps. With the goalie pulled in the final minute and the score at 4-2, the Caps pressed hard, scoring once and almost tying the game with only seconds left, but goalie Sean Hogan blocked several shots from in close to seal the deal for the Blue and Gold.
