Play-off Week 3: Lots of Action in All Directions!
Well it's happened for the first time ever in Tri-Com/DJHL League history, and it can't be repeated: two CBR Atom B teams will meet in a final series. This season the DJHL Operating Committee permitted the CBR Minor Hockey Association to enter two balanced teams in the Atom B division based on the number of players they had in that age bracket. Fast forward to February 20th and we can now look ahead to the Blue Renegades facing the Red Renegades in a best-of-three final. It's a small scale Islanders-Rangers match-up indeed! The Atom B Blue Renegades got to the final by eliminating the Mount Pearl Blades in two straight games by scores of 5-1 and 2-1. The second game was a thriller with the Blades tying the game in the final minute before Maconaughay Hodder scored the shoot-out winner to decide the outcome. The Red Renegades kept pace by sweeping the St. John's Caps 2-0 and 1-0. The Red Renegades goalie tandem of Evan Pearcey and Jack Turpin have recorded the only back-to-back shut-outs of the DJHL play-offs. In the 1-0 series clincher, Tyson Snow was the hero with the big game-winner. In Atom A, the St. John's Caps advanced to the championship series with a convincing 6-1 decision over the much-improved Avalon Celtics. The hat trick performance of shifty Thomas Chafe was the offensive highlight of the game. The Celtics made things interesting in the series by putting in their best effort of the season against the first-place Caps, a 3-2 loss in game 1 early in the week. In the other semi-final, the Blades came away with a 2-1 upset over the CBR Renegades to force a deciding game 3 next week in the other best-of-three semi-final series. Earlier in the week, the Renegades won 7-1 at the Glacier. In Bantam A, the Generals rebounded on Friday night at Bussey Horwood Arena to down the Guardians 4-1. The Generals scored by committee in this one, getting goals from Dylan Yee, Mitchell Saunders, Colin MacKinnon and Riley Best. Nick Bungay posted the win in the net. Earlier in the week the Guardians Green Machine rolled to a 3-1 victory over the first-place Generals on the strength of Jack O'Dea's two-goal performance and Joey Burton's strong goaltending. Devon O'Keefe also chipped in a snipe for the winners and Yee likewise for the losing side. The new play-off format, which ensures each team gets at least two play-off series, was welcomed by the four remaining Bantam A teams as they battled for the bronze through the new consolation round. The Thrashers defeated the Gladiators 4-0 thanks to two point nights from Paul Norman, Josh Neil and Jacob Dyer and a Devon Parsons' shut-out. In the other opener, the Crushers used their high tempo offensive attack to crack the armor of the Warriors in a 5-1 victory. The offensive star of the game was Eric Knight with a four point-two goal effort. Matthew King, Nathan Flynn, and Evan Knight had two point nights. On the Bantam B side of life, the first-place CBR Renegades continued their division dominance, trouncing the Avalon Celtics 7-0 in their semi-final opener. Game 2 goes today at Bussey Horwood Arena. The other semi-final series is proving much tighter, with a game 3 needed to declare a series winner. The Eagles shut-out the Caps 3-0 in the opener, only to have the favor returned the next night in a 1-0 loss. In the second game, Caps Ben Hillyard scored the game winner, while Devon Burt earned the shut-out. In Peewee A action, the Cobras-Jackals battle for gold showed signs of going the limit as each side notched a victory this week. The Jackals won the opener 4-2 on goals from Myles Bedford (2), Evan Peach and Kristian Simmons. Ryan Walsh and Alex Froude replied for the Cobras. The Cobras came back with a strong effort in the return match, firing a six-pack of goals (scorers not available) while goalie Josh Pretty surrendered only a solo marker to the talented Brady Mitchelmore. In Peewee A consolation round play, Logan Bishop-Wade's second of the night clinched a 4-3 victory for the Scorpions over the upstart Wolverines. Zach Eustace and Logan Cuza also had two point nights for the Scorpions. Zachary Coffey's big effort earned him a 3 point night for the Wolverines. In the other consolation round game, the Falcons used a strong skating game to defeat the Hawks 4-1. Their attack was led by Braedy Walsh with 3 points and Liam Picco with 2 goals. Brandon Powell snapped home the Hawks lone goal. The Peewee B Fisher Family Championship Trophy will certainly be earned by its eventual victors. The Renegades got a game winning goal from Drew Sheppard to edge the Pacers 3-2 on Friday night to force a third and deciding game in their semi-final series. Earlier in the week, the Pacers blanked the Renegades 3-0. In the other semi-final a third and deciding game is also needed after the Caps won 4-1 over the Eagles before losing the second match 2-1.
