Play-off Week 4: A Week of Firsts!
Hard not to cheer when you hear that the Avalon Celtics Atom B Team finally won their first game of the DJHL season to clinch a two-game total goal series against the St. John's Caps this week. The Celtics were winless in throughout the regular season games and three previous play-off games before claiming the series with a 2-0 win to advance on aggregate 5-4 . Bravo to the team for hanging in here. Nice to see how the new play-off format is creating good sports script! The other hot Atom B story is the never-to-be-repeated double Renegade final in Atom B. The Red Renegades goalie tandem of Evan Pearcey and Jack Turpin notched their consecutive shut-out on the way to a 4-0 victory over the Blue Renegades in the championship series opener. The most exciting finish to a play-off game in Week 4 belongs to the Eagles - Caps match in Bantam B. The Eagles, with the goalie pulled, scored with 43 seconds left and 25 seconds left to force an OT shoot-out and eventual 4-3 victory. The Guardians claimed the all-important game 3 of the best-of-five Bantam A final against the General by a 2-1 score to move within one win of the title. The Guardians have had more injuries this season than any other team, but have been on a play-off roll with their full roster. Jack O'Dea scored the winning goal in the close-checking affair. In Peewee A at the new CBS Arena, stellar three-point performances from Perry Cahill and Alex Froude highlighted a 6-1 win by the RBC Cobras over the RBC Jackals to pull the team to within one win of the coveted title. Adam Baggs earned the cage win for the Cobras. Elsewhere this week, the CBR Renegades defeated a tough Mount Pearl Blades squad 4-2 to advance to the Atom A final against the St. John's Caps. In Peewee B Caps advanced to the final with a 3-1 win over the Eagles. The Thrashers and Crushers advanced to the Bantam A Bronze medal series, and the Wolverines defeated the Hawks 6-4 in their Peewee A Bronze medal series opener. Wolverines got there by winning a four round shoot-out over the Scorpions, while the Hawks needed a big shut-out effort from Caleb Druken to get there.
