New Approach for DJHL Try-out Camps

news2018-08-22
In response to feedback from the recent survey undertaken by our member Minor Hockey Associations, the DJHL will be introducing a new try-out format this season for our Pooled Peewee A and Bantam A try-outs. Under a streamed approach, smaller numbers of players will start out being evaluated within two groups. Skaters and goalies will be selected to advance to a third and final round from which full-time roster picks will be made. DJHL try-outs will start September 22 for Streams 1 and 2 in both Bantam A and Peewee A. Stream 3 (the final phase) will start September 29 in both divisions. A full schedule will be posted once on-line registration is completed on September 9th. Bantam A try-outs will be held at Glacier 1 and Peewee A try-outs will be held at Twin Rinks. The try-out fee will remain at $100 and guarantee each player a minimum of 4 hours of try-out time. A small additional charge may be collected for the September 21st Bantam A checking clinic (one hour on ice and one hour in classroom per player). Make up of player groupings in each stream will be determined in large part by how often players graduating from various levels tend to make the Pooled Program (for example, how often, based on statistical evidence, a player coming out of Atom B makes Peewee A). There will be no cap on how many players will advance from either Streams 1 or 2, but space at Stream 3 will be limited. The DJHL reserves the right to skate a player in a stream that he or she would not have skated in based on where they played last season if such a move allows for adequate evaluation and avoids clashing with other major sporting events, or deals with injury or illness. A significant change for our try-out process will be the introduction of more skill sessions and less scrimmages, and the use of skill sessions with specific drills to assess our goalies. The latter will replace the traditional goalie sessions in all cases except the final stream of Bantam A try-outs. Another positive feature of our new approach will be the two-week post-camp period in which appointed coaches will have an opportunity to see selected players perform in four hours of scrimmage each prior to Draft Week. APs will be selected during Draft Week but only announced after Association B All-Star teams have been announced. APs have to make B level to be named as an AP in the DJHL Pooled Program. An announcement as to when the try-out fee has to be paid will follow later. BANTAM A: Stream 1 will consist of House graduates, Peewee B graduates and others (projected pool of 60 players on 4 teams). Stream 2 will consist of players who played in Peewee A & Bantam B last season(projected pool of 100 players on 8 teams). Selected players from Streams 1 & 2 will advance to Stream 3 where they will be joined by returning Bantam A players, Peewee AAA graduates and any players not returning to Bantam AAA (projected pool of 136 or 15 skaters and 2 goalies on each of 8 teams). PEEWEE A: Stream 1 will consist of House graduates, Atom B graduates and others (projected pool of 100 players on 8 teams). Stream 2 will consist of Atom A graduates (projected pool of 70 players on 6 teams). Selected players from Streams 1 & 2 will advance to Stream 3 where they will be joined by returning Peewee A players, players from Peewee B last year, and any players not returning to Peewee AAA (projected pool of 136 or 15 skaters and 2 goalies on each of 8 teams).
