Sportscraft Stars of Week #1 Announced!
news • 2019-02-24
Week 1 in the DJHL play-off season featured 18 games across three B divisions and no shortage of outstanding performances. Therefore, we had lots of nominations to pick from for our Sportscraft Stars of the Week promotion. There was enough fire power on display for offensive stars to dominate our picks this week.
First Star goes to Owen Edney of the Mount Pearl Peewee B Blades. Down 3-2 after game 1 in a close two game total goal series against St. John’s Caps, Owen led the offensive attack for the Boys in Blue & White. His four point night at Twin Rinks (two goals, two assists) included the series winner with 27 seconds to play.
Second Star goes to Johnny Russell of the St. John’s Atom B Caps. With a nickname of “Mr. Hustle†there’s no need to say much about his effort every shift. This week his stick was working the magic to reward him and his team. Johnny’s hat trick in game 2 of his team’s series against the Northeast Eagles was the game changer, allowing the Caps to win 4-2 and advance on a 9-5 aggregate to the semi-final round.
Third Star is earned by Ryan Holwell of the Avalon Bantam B Celtics. The Captain certainly led by his actions this week, scoring three goals over two preliminary round games to help his team advance pass the Paradise Warriors 6-3 on aggregate.
Special Mention this week is the exclusive domain of the Mount Pearl Bantam B Blades. It was quite difficult to figure out who stood out the most in the seventh-place Blades’ opening round upset over the second-place Southern Shore Breakers because so many players stepped up in the 6-4 aggregate victory. But we will single out the exceptional offensive play of forward Jacob Byrne, the defensive play of winger Nathan Marshall, and the game 2 shut-out delivered by goalie Maddox Carter.
Three Stars can pick up their gift certificates at Sportscraft on Ropewalk Lane as of Monday.
